Students participated in assembling the Lettuce Grow system, setting up young plants in it and starting seeds. In upcoming weeks, students will learn about monitoring for the nutrients and PH levels needed for optimal plant growth. They will harvest lettuce and prepare a salad and salad dressing to enjoy a healthy home-grown snack. As the plants grow, some things go as planned and others do not. The ever-changing results and developments provide on-going real-life, concrete, visual shared experiences to discuss and write about. The students and staff are extremely excited to be observing plant growth over time and participating in the study of hydroponics. As one fifth-grader exclaimed, “This is the best thing ever!”
